Criteria of a True Leader

Bameswarablogs -- A leader is someone who is appointed to lead a group, whether small or large scale. Of course, the leader of the group is chosen from those who best meet their criteria, and not everyone who meets the criteria can be called a leader if they do not have the ability to lead. There is also leadership that is inherited and there is also leadership that is chosen through deliberation.

In this article, I will briefly review the criteria for someone worthy of being called a leader. A leader doesn't necessarily have to be born into a distinguished family; rather, those who inherit leadership traits are often naturally inherited from their ancestors. A true leader is someone who can first guide themselves in a positive direction before guiding those they lead in the right direction.

Many in world history have recorded that great leaders are not born from comfort and tranquility; they are formed through forging and testing. This aligns with the old adage, "A skilled captain is never made from calm waves." This adage aligns with the determination of a leader who possesses a great soul, perfect in both reason and action.

These are the criteria that should be embedded in the souls of leaders. Someone who only has the ability to speak still cannot be said to have the ability to be a leader. Why I say that someone who only has the ability to speak cannot be called a leader? Because the reason is that someone who is only good at talking will only form opinions, not facts. And people who are good at talking can actually trigger conflict if their words or topics of conversation are not soothing and do not have a calming meaning.

The first characteristic of a true leader is tabliq, which means conveying. Isn't that something everyone can convey? Surely everyone has the ability to convey, especially in today's increasingly advanced world with the help of technology, where conveying is the easiest thing. Even slander is carried out by those with relatively articulate speaking skills. Tabliq, as referred to here, is a method of conveying messages that contains values of wisdom, truth, and leads to a path of social peace for humanity and all humankind throughout the world.

The second characteristic of a true leader is trustworthiness, Trustworthiness means being able to hold the responsibility entrusted to him before he holds a greater responsibility, if someone who cannot hold the trust is then given a responsibility to lead how will his leadership produce the best policy, especially if he is given the trust then throws his own mistakes to others, how can such a person be called a leader. A true leader must be able to accept both light and heavy trusts, a leader cannot wash his hands of the mistakes he leads no matter how small, so a leader must have a big soul that is able to admit the smallest mistakes in his leadership, because the smallest mistakes made by a leader will have big consequences especially if he washes his hands of his own mistakes which he considers small, great leaders are those who admit their mistakes if there are even the smallest mistakes in his leadership.

The third characteristic of a true leader is Fathonah, which means clever, intelligent, and knowledgeable. A leader should be knowledgeable, possess perfect intelligence, and possess the skill or adeptness to respond to an event not based on personal desires but based on the interests and welfare of those he leads. In fact, it is not surprising that leaders during the golden age of Islam, in the era after the death of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, those who were entrusted with the role of a leader actually cried when given the responsibility to lead the people. Because the task of a leader is not an easy matter, solving problems is not a simple matter with a word and then the problem is resolved. Instead, solving problems must be done with common sense, based on knowledge and inner peace, measuring and weighing how much benefit and harm will be caused when he determines the policy, because a leader is not only about himself who thinks about those he leads. "A great leader, is one who cries when seeing his people suffer."

The fourth characteristic of a true leader is "Sidiq.". "Sidiq" means honest and trustworthy. An honest and trustworthy leader is the kind of leader everyone aspires to. A person with a good and honest personality will certainly be loved by many. These are the criteria for a true leader. This review merely attempts to describe or illustrate the meaning of leadership, not to judge anyone. I hope this article will inspire you to seek the best leadership and pray for the best.

"O you who believe! Do not take as your leaders anyone (who does not submit to Allah) other than the believers. Do you want to give Allah a clear reason to punish you?"
